Wayne Darling, born January 3, 1945, in Perry, Iowa, is an American bassist and composer known for his work in modern jazz. He began playing contrabass at age 13 and studied at Drake University, Ball State University, and North Texas State University. Early in his career, he worked with Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, and Dave Liebman. In 1974, Darling moved to Austria to study under Ludwig Streicher. He performed with Ed Soph, Friedrich Gulda, Joe Henderson, and became a member of the ORF Big Band. Throughout his career, he also collaborated with artists like Benny Carter, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, and Dave Liebman. In 1983, Darling was appointed as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, where he taught until his retirement. Notable albums include Iliad (1986) and Wayne Darling Presents: The Art of the Bass Vol. 1 (2002).
