Claudine Longet was born in Paris (29 January 1942) and trained as a dancer before moving to the United States to perform in Las Vegas revues. She met singer Andy Williams in 1960, married him the following year, and became a familiar television personality through frequent appearances on The Andy Williams Show. Her visibility there helped launch both her acting and recording careers during the mid-1960s. After a televised performance of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Meditation,” she was signed by Herb Alpert to A&M Records in 1966. Her debut album Claudine (1967) became a major success, followed by popular albums including The Look of Love (1967), Love Is Blue (1968), and Colours (1968). She became known for soft orchestral pop and bossa nova-influenced recordings, with songs such as “Here, There and Everywhere,” “Good Day Sunshine,” and “Love Is Blue” becoming adult contemporary hits. Alongside music, she maintained an acting career with appearances in television series including McHale’s Navy, Combat!, and Hogan’s Heroes. Her best-known film role came in Blake Edwards’s 1968 comedy The Party with Peter Sellers, where she performed “Nothing to Lose,” one of her signature songs. Her marriage to Andy Williams ended in divorce in 1975. Soon afterward, her life became overshadowed by the 1976 shooting death of Olympic skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich, her boyfriend at the time, in Aspen, Colorado. Claudine Longet claimed the shooting was accidental; after a highly publicized trial she was convicted only of negligent homicide and received a brief jail sentence and probation. The scandal effectively ended her public career. After the trial she withdrew almost entirely from public life, later marrying her defense attorney Ronald Austin. In later decades her recordings developed a cult following among fans of 1960s orchestral pop, lounge music, and sunshine pop, and her albums were rediscovered by younger audiences and collectors. Claudine Longet died on May 14, 2026, at the age of 84.
