Undercover is a British pop and dance group from London. The band was formed in the early 1990s. The lineup includes Jon Jules on bass, Steve Mac as songwriter and producer, and Tim Laws on guitar. John Matthews provides lead vocals on several recordings. Undercover specializes in modern dance-pop and house versions of well-known pop classics from the 1970s, becoming one of the most successful cover bands of the early 1990s in Europe. The group achieved its international breakthrough in 1992 with the single “Baker Street.” Their cover of the Gerry Rafferty classic reached No. 2 in the UK and Switzerland, as well as No. 3 in Germany and Austria. In Germany, the single was certified Gold. The track was also among the best-selling singles of 1992 in the UK. Later that same year, “Never Let Her Slip Away” followed, reaching No. 5 on the UK charts and No. 16 in Germany. In 1993, “I Wanna Stay With You” was released, peaking at No. 28 in the UK. Their debut album, Check Out The Groove, was released in 1992. It reached No. 26 on the UK album charts, No. 29 in Austria, and No. 56 in Germany. In 1994, the band released their second album, *Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us*. The singles “Lovesick” (1993) and “Best Friend” (1994). The latter reached No. 67 in Germany. Other releases include “The Way It Is” (1993), “I’m Not In Love” (1994), “Every Breath You Take” (1995), “Bring Back Your Love” (1996), “If You Leave Me Now” (2000), and “Viva England” (2004), which once again made it into the British charts.
