Sweet Substitute, an all-female trio from Bristol, England, was formed in 1975 when English folk musician Andy Leggett suggested that singer Teri Penfold reach out to Angie Masterton and Eiri Thrasher to create a group. The group specialized in jazz and swing harmony recordings, including a cappella performances. Their first album, Something Special, was released in 1977 on Decca Records and became BBC Radio 2's album of the week. The trio appeared on various radio shows and TV programs, such as BBC TV’s The Good Old Days. In 1980, they began performing with a new repertoire on BBC radio shows after leaving Decca Records. Their subsequent album, Sophisticated Ladies, was released in 1981 under Black Lion Records. The line-up for this album included Angie Masterton, Teri Leggett (formerly Penfold), and Kate McNab. During their career, they collaborated with notable artists like Georgie Fame and guitarist Kit Morgan. In 1999, founding member Angie Masterton passed away.
