In 1951, he became the arranger-conductor for the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra, significantly contributing to its success. He left the BBC in 1960 to go freelance and conducted notable events such as multiple Eurovision Song Contests between 1975 and 1990. Ainsworth also provided music for various television shows, including Lena Zavaroni and Music in 1979. He passed away on October 4, 1990, in London.
