Crack the Sky, a progressive rock band from Weirton, West Virginia, formed in 1975. Their debut album Crack the Sky was released in 1975 and reached number 161 on the Billboard 200 chart, receiving critical acclaim from Rolling Stone and The New York Times. In 1978, their second album Animal Notes peaked at number 142 on the same chart. After Palumbo left in 1977 and the band issued the live set Live Sky and compilation Classic Crack, he rejoined to make White Music (1980), Photoflamingo (1981) and World in Motion 1 (1983) before another breakup and his mid-1980s solo work; the Crack the Sky name returned on Raw (1986) and the environmentally themed From the Greenhouse (1988), followed by Dog City (1990) and the compilation Rare! (1994). A reunion in 1996 led to the studio album Cut (1998) and the live set Live—Recher Theatre 06.19.99, then to 2000s releases Ghost (2001), Dogs from Japan (2004) and the concept album The Sale (2007). In the 2010s the band issued Machine (2010), Ostrich (2012) and The Beauty of Nothing (2015) before a renewed burst of activity with Living in Reverse and the re-recording anthology Crackology in 2018, followed by the studio album Tribes (2021). In the 2020s Crack the Sky continued under Palumbo’s leadership with the deep-cuts compilation Between the Cracks (2021), the largely acoustic album From the Wood (2023), the archival collection The Baker Files (2024) and the live release Live First Album and studio album Blessed in 2025, while maintaining a stable lineup featuring Palumbo, Witkowski, Macre, D’Amico, Bobby Hird and Bill Hubauer and performing regularly in the eastern United States.
