Luis Kalaff Pérez, born on October 11, 1916, in the Dominican Republic, was a singer and prolific composer. At 14, he built his first guitar and began composing songs that blended genres like merengue and bolero. Kalaff Pérez was the first to bring mangulina to radio broadcasts and composed nearly 2,000 songs, many popularized by artists such as Alberto Beltrán and Fernando Villalona. Notable works include "La hija y la mama" and "Juancito Trucupey." His discography includes albums like El rey del Merengue (1962). In 1996, he received the Orden al Mérito de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella from President Leonel Fernández. The Senate of the Republic declared him "Artista Meritísimo" in 2000.
