Kim Yon-ja (김연자) is a legendary South Korean trot singer, often hailed as the "Empress of Enka" for her success in Japan. Born on January 25, 1959, in Gwangju, South Korea, she was encouraged by her father to pursue music. She debuted in 1974 after winning the TBC National Song Rookie Star Show and released her first song, "Tell Me", under Oasis Records. After an initial attempt to establish herself in Japan, Kim returned to Korea and rose to fame in the 1980s with the album Bouquet of Songs, selling 3.6 million copies. Her hits "Is It Really" (1982) and "Mercury Lamp" (1984) cemented her reputation, and she gained international recognition after performing "In the Land of the Morning" at the 1984 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. A Japanese version of the song launched her successful enka career in Japan. Kim spent nearly 30 years in Japan, releasing multiple albums and engaging in charity work before returning to Korea in 2012. In 2017, she experienced a major career resurgence with "Amor Fati" (2013), a dance-infused trot song that became a nationwide sensation, solidifying her status as a timeless icon in Korean music.
