Ivan The Tolerable is the solo project of Middlesbrough musician Oli Heffernan, a prolific producer whose work drifts between experimental psychedelia, kosmische, jazz, ambient, and lo-fi 'library-hop'. Known for his restless creativity and refusal to be pinned to a single genre, he layers loops, drones, field recordings, and live instrumentation into cinematic soundscapes that move from intimate to expansive. His output includes both solo recordings and collaborative projects with musicians such as Ben Hopkinson, Mees Siderius, and James McKeown, often released on labels like Riot Season, Echodelick Records, Up In Her Room, and Library Of The Occult. Across dozens of albums and EPs, Ivan The Tolerable has built a vast and unpredictable body of work, ranging from the cosmic jazz of Vertigo (2024) and the expansive An Orphan Form (2025) to the introspective Wild Nature! (2019, reissued 2024) and the beat-driven Nocturnes (2025). Each release feels like its own world, yet all share a spontaneous, exploratory spirit that has made him one of the UK’s most inventive underground voices. In 2025, he teamed up with Hawksmoor for Atoms Into the Void.
