Flash, an English progressive rock band, was formed in August 1971 by former Yes guitarist Peter Banks, vocalist Colin Carter, bassist Ray Bennett, and drummer Mike Hough. The group recorded its debut album in November 1971 and performed its first gig on January 14, 1972. Flash achieved a notable hit with "Small Beginnings" (1972), which peaked at Number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was featured in the movie Record Review. The band released three albums: Flash (1972), In the Can (November 1972), and Out of Our Hands (1973). They were signed with Sovereign, a subsidiary of Capitol Records. Flash toured extensively in North America four times, Continental Europe once, and Australia briefly while making their third album. The band disbanded during an American tour in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in November 1973. Following the breakup, members continued to collaborate in various projects. In 2013, a live recording from a 1973 concert at Kansas City's Cowtown Ballroom was prepared by Peter Banks before his death. The band reunited briefly for performances and released new material, including Flash Featuring Ray Bennett & Colin Carter (2013), which featured a cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails. Colin Carter died on January 10, 2025, at the age of 76.
