Xul Zolar, a Synth Pop/New Wave group from Cologne, Germany, was formed in 2011 by singer Ronald Röttel and guitarist Marin Geier. The band's name is derived from Argentine painter Xul Solar. Shortly after their formation, drummer Tim Gorinski joined the lineup. Their early performances included supporting Future Islands. In 2012, they released their first vinyl single independently, "Eternal Love / Goa Bay," and secured third place at the inaugural Pop-NRW Prize. Collaborating with producers Jochen Naaf and Sven Ludwig, Xul Zolar released the single "Hex" in 2013. The band gained traction through performances at notable festivals such as MS Dockville, Immergut Festival, and Reeperbahn Festival. In 2015, they released the EP Tides on their own label Asmara Records, which received critical acclaim. Their debut album Fear Talk, released in January 2018 via Asmara Records and Rough Trade, was well-received by critics. In September 2019, the band released the EP Nightfalls and toured Germany and Switzerland.
