A Whisper in the Noise is an American musical project founded in 2002 by the composer West Thordson. The group is famous for a dark sound and unique instrumentation that utilizes cello, violin, and French horn in place of traditional guitars. Centered in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, they released their debut studio album, Through the Ides of March, in 2002. In 2004, the ensemble collaborated with the band If Thousands on the split recording 2D. Their discography includes the studio recordings As the Bluebird Sings (2006), which featured an adaptation of the Bob Dylan track “The Times They Are a-Changin’”, and Dry Land (2007). Following the departure of the multi-instrumentalist Matt Irwin and the violinist Hannah Murray in 2008, Sonja Larson joined as a vocalist and violinist. Their later work includes the studio recording To Forget (2012).
