Johanna Louise “Anneke” Grönloh was a Dutch singer born on 7 June 1942 in Tondano. She was raised in Eindhoven and achieved professional recognition in 1959 after winning a national talent show. Grönloh became a prominent figure in the 1960s with hit singles including “Brandend zand” (1961), which is one of the best-selling Dutch songs of all time, and “Paradiso” (1962). In 1964, she represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest with the track “Jij bent mijn leven” (1964), finishing in number 10. Her recording career included interpretations of the kroncong genre, such as “Bengawan Solo” and “Nina Bobo”, as well as jazz standards. In 2000, she was named Singer of the Century in the Netherlands due to her record-breaking sales. Grönloh was active until 2017 and died on 14 September 2018 in Arleuf, France. Posthumous releases include the single “Samen willen bouwen” (2021) and previously unissued recordings written by André Hazes (2025).
