Jimmy Halperin, born in 1958 in Queens, New York City, is an American saxophonist and composer known for his work in avant-garde jazz. Influenced by Lennie Tristano, Halperin received lessons from Tristano and Sal Mosca at a young age. His first recordings were made in 1986 with the Warne Marsh Quintet on the album Back Home. Since 1982, he collaborated extensively with bassist Dominic Duval. In 1997, Halperin released his debut album Psalm, a Tristano-dedicated duet with Sal Mosca on Zinnia Records. Notable releases include Joy and Gravitas (2003) featuring interpretations of jazz standards such as "A Night in Tunisia" and "My Funny Valentine", and Monk Dreams (2009), a collaboration with Dominic Duval, released on NoBusiness Records.
