The Washboard Rhythm Kings was a jazz group active from 1930 to 1935. The band featured Bruce Johnson on washboard and included musicians like guitarist Teddy Bunn and trumpeters Valaida Snow and Taft Jordan. They played good-time swinging music with spirited vocals, horns, and occasional kazoo, covering current hits from other artists. Notable recordings included "Tiger Rag" (1932), cited as an early precursor of rock and roll, and their song "Pepper Steak", which gained cultural significance after being sampled in the indie game Off. They recorded for multiple labels including Victor, Vocalion, Columbia, ARC, and Decca.
