Whispered, a death metal band from Finland, was formed in 2001 in Riihimäki by Jouni Valjakka. Initially known as Zealot, the group changed its name to Whispered in 2004 and released their first demo, Bloodthroned. The band's early EPs included Blindfold (2006) and Wrath of Heaven (2007). In 2009, Whispered signed with Redhouse Finland Music Publishing and released their debut album, Thousand Swords in 2010, followed by Shogunate Macabre in 2014. Their third album, Metsutan - Songs of the Void, was released in 2016 and received critical acclaim. The band embarked on tours with Black Therapy and Wintersun in 2017, but announced the departure of their drummer Jussi Kallava later that year.
