George Russell spanned the twentieth century, living through and taking part in most of the jazz revolutions. He apprenticed in the golden age of swing, took part in the birth of bebop in the mid-1940s, and pioneered, if not invented, modal jazz in the '50s with the first edition of his treatise The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. Then, in the 70s, he integrated the rhythms of rock and the new sounds of electronic music (magnetic tape and synthesizers). He died on July 27, 2009 at the age of 86.
