Gary George Peacock was born on May 12, 1935, in Burley, Idaho, and grew up in Yakima, Washington. He initially played piano, trumpet, and drums before switching to double bass while stationed in Germany during his Army service. After being discharged in 1956, Peacock returned to Los Angeles and began his professional career, playing with notable musicians such as Barney Kessel and Art Pepper. In the early 1960s, he moved to New York City, where he collaborated with Paul Bley, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis. Peacock's extensive discography includes albums like Trio 64 with Bill Evans and Paul Motian, and his own releases such as Eastward, Now This, and Tangents. He was also a key member of Keith Jarrett’s "Standards Trio," recording over twenty albums with the group. Peacock passed away on September 4, 2020.
