The Plastic People of the Universe, a Prague alternative rock band, was formed in 1968 by bassist Milan Hlavsa. Influenced by Frank Zappa and the Velvet Underground, they began performing during the Prague Spring but faced immediate challenges due to the Soviet invasion and subsequent Communist regime. In 1970, their musical license was revoked, leading to underground performances. Their first studio album, Egon Bondy's Happy Hearts Club Banned, was recorded in 1974 but not released until 1978 in France. The band faced severe persecution, including arrests and prison sentences for organized disturbance of the peace in 1976. Despite these challenges, they continued to create music, releasing notable albums such as Passion Play (1980), Leading Horses (1983), and Midnight Mouse (1987). In 2024, the 50th anniversary of Egon Bondy's Happy Hearts Club Banned was marked by the PPU Egon Bondy Tour 2024. Organized by Vladimír Drápal, the tour featured former band members and musicians associated with The Plastic People of the Universe during the 1980s.
