Paul Lawrence Vincent Esswood is an English countertenor and conductor. Esswood studied at the Royal College of Music from 1961 to 1964 and sang in the choir of Westminster Abbey. A professional debut occurred in a performance of Handel's Messiah (1741) in 1967. Esswood participated in over 150 recordings, including the alto parts of many Bach cantatas for the Teldec series. He co-founded Pro Cantione Antiqua and established a career as a conductor of Baroque opera. Notable roles include the title role in the Philip Glass opera Akhnaten (1983) and Death in the Penderecki opera Paradise Lost (1978). Esswood was a visiting professor at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk. Later performances include conducting Lully's Armide (1686) in 2020 and Handel's Jephtha (1751) in 2023.
