Eugene Friesen, born in 1952 to Russian Mennonite parents, is an American cellist and composer. He graduated from the Yale School of Music and became a member of the Paul Winter Consort in 1978, where he performed alongside Howard Levy and Glen Velez as Trio Globo. His notable solo works include New Friend (1986) and In the Shade of Angels (2005). He received four Grammy Awards with the Paul Winter Consort for the albums Spanish Angel (1993), Silver Solstice (2005), Crestone (2007), and Miho: Journey to the Mountain (2010). Friesen notably authored Improvisation for Classical Musicians, published in 2012, and taught at Berklee College of Music. He also ran Sonoterra Productions, a nonprofit company producing concerts, recordings, and workshops.
