Aneka (born November 20, 1947, in Marykirk, Scotland) is a British singer considered a defining voice of the early 1980s in the Eurodisco and pop genres. Starting in the late 1970s, she initially worked as a folk singer under her real name, Mary Sandeman. In 1981, she launched the Aneka project, which focused on a stylistic shift toward pop and disco. The project quickly became a unique international phenomenon on the European pop scene. She achieved her commercial breakthrough in 1981 with the single “Japanese Boy.” The song reached high chart positions in several European countries and became her best-known track. The eponymous album *Aneka* (1981) followed shortly thereafter and remains her most significant release. After her success in 1981, she largely withdrew from the international music business.
