Lionel Bart, born Lionel Begleiter on 1 August 1930 in England, was an English songwriter whose career spanned pop and musical theatre. Early in the 1950s Lionel Bart wrote revues for the International Youth Centre and Unity Theatre, where he met Joan Littlewood and began composing for her Theatre Workshop productions. His first commercial breakthrough came with the 1957 hit "Living Doll" for Cliff Richard, followed by "Rock with the Caveman" for Tommy Steele. In 1960 he made his musical debut with Oliver!, earning Bart the 1963 Tony Award for Best Original Score and contributing to the film’s 1968 Academy Awards haul. Subsequent works included the musical Blitz! (1962), the musical Maggie May (1964), and the musical Twang!! (1965). Lionel Bart’s pop catalogue featured "Do You Mind?" (recorded by Anthony Newley and Andy Williams), "Big Time" (Jack Jones, 1961), and "Happy Endings" (1989, Abbey National campaign). Despite later financial difficulties and health issues, Lionel Bart received a life‑achievement Ivor Novello Award in 1986. Lionel Bart died of liver cancer on 3 April 1999 at Hammersmith Hospital, leaving a legacy of chart‑winning songs and a foundational contribution to British musical theatre.
