The Studs, a Japanese visual kei rock band, was formed in 2007 by vocalist Daisuke, formerly a member of the band Kagerou. Daisuke led the trio, comprising guitarist Aie, bassist Yukino, and drummer Hibiki. The group began performing in 2007 and later joined an independent label, expanding its activities in Japan and abroad. Their mini‑album Studs was released in 2007, followed by their first single, "Niji no iro" in 2008. The band continued to release a series of singles, such as "Gaze" and "クリーピークローリー", and two full albums, such as their debut album And Hate in 2008, followed by Alansmithee in 2009. After a brief hiatus in 2009, Daisuke later pursued a solo career under the name Daisuke and the Black Hermits. Aie remained active with projects including Gibkiy Gibkiy Gibkiy, The God and Death Stars, The Madcap Laughs, and Keel. Hibiki left the band in 2009 due to differences in musical direction, while Yukino departed during the hiatus for similar reasons. Yukino later performed in Dim My Division alongside Hibiki. Daisuke died on July 15, 2010. The band participated in a memorial concert for Daisuke on July 15, 2011, which also featured former members Yukino and Hibiki.
