Amsterdam, an English pop group formed in Liverpool in 1999, emerged from Merseyside’s vibrant music scene with founding member Ian Prowse on vocals and guitar. The band’s breakthrough came with the single "The Journey", released in February 2005 and reaching Number 32 on the UK Singles Chart, followed by the charting single "Does This Train Stop on Merseyside?" in June 2005. In 2005 the group signed with Beat Crazy Records and issued their debut album The Journey, which included the BBC Radio 2‑playlisted track "Takin' On The World". After parting with Beat Crazy in 2006, Amsterdam released the live album 1,2,3,4 (2007) and the studio album Arm in Arm (2008). The band continued to perform at festivals such as the Liverpool International Music Festival in 2014 and toured under the name Ian Prowse & Amsterdam. In 2021 the internet‑only album Attitunes was reissued on Kitchen Disco Records, and the group’s earlier release The Journey received a reissue in 2025. Throughout their career, Amsterdam maintained a presence on BBC Radio, collaborated with Elvis Costello on television, and contributed to the Mersey Boys and Liverpool Girls compilation alongside Paul McCartney, marking notable milestones in their discography and live performances.
