The Untouchables, a soul and mod revival band from Silver Lake, Los Angeles, California, formed in 1981 as part of the embryonic L.A. mod revival. Inspired by the ska revival and punk rock band The Boxboys, the original lineup included Kevin Long, Chuck Askerneese, Terry Ellsworth, Clyde Grimes, Rob Lampron, Herman Askerneese, and Jerry Miller. Their first single "Twist 'N' Shake" was released in 1982, marking their debut in the music scene. The band's breakthrough came with their second single "The General", which became a minor local hit despite poor distribution. In early 1984, they were signed to Stiff Records and began touring extensively, performing with notable acts such as The B-52's, Black Uhuru, and R.E.M.. Their album Wild Child was released in 1985, featuring the popular track "Free Yourself", which reached Number 26 on the UK charts. The band appeared in several films, including Surf II, Repo Man, and No Man's Land. Throughout their career, The Untouchables went through numerous lineup changes, with original vocalist Jerry Miller being the last remaining member from the original lineup until his death on October 3, 2024. Original guitarist Clyde Grimes passed away on July 5, 2016.
