Brewer Phillips, born on November 16, 1924, in Coila, Mississippi, was an American blues guitarist. Growing up on a plantation, he was introduced to blues music by Memphis Minnie and had the opportunity to see many blues greats perform live. After moving to Memphis, Phillips became a professional musician, playing with Bill Harvey and Roosevelt Sykes. In 1960, he joined The HouseRockers, the backing band for Hound Dog Taylor, where he often mimicked bass lines on his guitar due to the absence of a bassist in the group. Following Taylor's death in 1975, Phillips continued to perform sporadically with artists such as J.B. Hutto, Lil’ Ed, and Cub Koda. He released several albums including Homebrew (1995) on Delmark Records and Well Alright (1999), released by Black Rose. Phillips passed away on August 30, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois.
