Shigeru Izumiya is a Japanese singer-songwriter, actor, and cultural figure known for his influential career in folk and rock music. Born in 1948, he debuted in 1971 with the live album Izumiya Shigeru Tojyo and quickly gained recognition for his socially conscious lyrics and raw musical energy. His song "Syunkasyutou"(1972) remains one of his most iconic works. Throughout the 1970s, Izumiya was a key figure in Japan's folk and rock scene, working with prominent artists such as Yoshida Takuro and joining the founding of For Life Records alongside Koichi Komuro and Yosui Inoue. He transitioned to a more rock-oriented sound in the late 1970s and 1980s, collaborating with bands like The Sadistic Mika Band. Beyond music, Izumiya has had a successful acting career, appearing in films such as Aftermath of Battles Without Honor and Humanity and TV dramas like Kinyoubi no tsuma tachi e. He has also been deeply involved in social activism, leading numerous charity events for disaster relief. In recent years, he has continued to perform and release new music. In 2024, he released Shin Self Covers Kaibutsu (2025), a collection of reimagined versions of his past songs, reaffirming his enduring influence on Japanese rock and folk music.
