The Speaks, a Filipino-American alternative rock band, was established in Washington, D.C. in 1999. Their debut album Life's a Joke (2003) featured notable singles such as "High" and "Life's a Joke". The band gained recognition by winning competitions like the JAXX World's Largest Battle of the Bands in 2003 and the DC 101 Last Band Standing in 2004. Their subsequent album, This is the Time (2007), debuted at Number 1 on the Filetopia online radio station in the United Kingdom. Their third album, The Price of Freedom, followed in 2011.
