He first released the single "Best I Can" on 25 September 2017, followed by a duet version featuring Sharon Van Etten on the same date, establishing his presence in the folk‑rock scene. In 2014, Michael Austin Cera released his debut studio album True That on 8 August, which contained 19 original tracks and covers of Roderick Falconer and Blaze Foley; the album showcased his lo‑fi indie folk style and was distributed through his Bandcamp page.
