As one of the most idiosyncratic voices emerging from Texas, Uncle Skitz’ blend of deep-fried southern trap and hearty pop balladry makes his debut album 1PLAYAWAY thrilling yet soulful. Skitz began his music career in the mid-2010s in his hometown of Dallas as a songwriter for several prominent Texas rappers. Though often uncredited, Skitz honed his skills as a writer and developed his signature sound and style from which his name is derived from. His high-pitched shrieks, wildly unpredictable flow and animated delivery draws parallels to Young Thug and Eminem, but it's Skitz’ story of love, pain and addiction that’s most compelling.
Ambitious and thoughtful, 1PLAYAWAY inculcates self-actualization and perseverance through the narrations of its unorthodox protagonist. Uncle Skitz is bold, desirous, lovestruck, raunchy and charming. Juxtaposed between the traumas of addiction and heartbreak, 1PLAYAWAY serves as a proclamation of renewed focus on success and positive life choices.
The first track “Bite the Dust” is akin to an intergalactic summons as it opens with a psychedelic whistle layered against brassy bass synths. A frustrated ex-lover is then heard over voicemail scolding Skitz for his trapping and inconsiderate ways. On the hook he exclaims “She always run her mouth told that bitch to bite the dust”. The trap breakup banger is as passionate as it is fun. On “Treadmill”, Skitz taunts a fling over a short-lived relationship. “Gotta go we had a nice run” proclaims the animated rapper over the glistening atmospheric beat. The following cuts “Receipts” and “Long Distance” are less toxic and reveal a more sensitive and emotive side. The confessional lyrics offer a small glimpse into the heart of the dynamic protagonist.
