David Wertman, born on October 1, 1952, in New York City, was an American jazz bassist and composer. He began playing jazz autodidactically and started his career working with various artists such as Earl Freeman, Billy Bang, Arthur Blythe, Marion Brown, Steve Reid, Dave Pike, and Hilton Ruiz. Wertman led several groups including the Sun Ensemble, for which he also composed music. His notable albums include Kara Suite (1976), featuring Charles Tyler, Richard Schatzberg, Ken Simon, and Steve Reid; Earthly Delights (1978); Up in the Sky (1981); and Wide Eye Culture (2008). He also collaborated with big bands led by Ray Anthony, Erskine Hawkins, and Les Elgart, as well as vocalists like Buddy Greco, Barbara McNair, The Ink Spots, The Shirelles, and The Drifters. Wertman was involved in 18 recording sessions between 1975 and 2013. He passed away on December 14, 2013, at the age of 61 due to cancer.
