Gim Jinhui, known professionally as Jin Hi Kim, was born on February 6, 1957 in Incheon, South Korea. She is a composer and performer of komungo (geomungo) and electric komungo. She began her studies in traditional Korean music at the National High School for Korean Traditional Music in 1973, where she focused on geomungo. After graduating from Seoul National University in 1980, Kim emigrated to the United States to study composition and electronic music. Her career includes notable albums such as Sargeng (1990), KomunGuitar (1993), Komungo 'Round the World (1995), and Komungo (2001). Kim performed as a soloist at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. She received commissions from the American Composers Orchestra and Kronos Quartet, and her works include the development of komungobot, an algorithmic robotic instrument.
