Maryla Jona, born on May 31, 1911 in Warsaw, Poland, was a pianist who began her musical journey at age nine. She studied under Ignacy Jan Paderewski and debuted with the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra in 1920. Jonas's career took off in 1926 with a successful tour starting in Germany. In 1932, she secured the 13th place at the second International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. Her victories continued with the Beethoven Prize of Vienna in 1933, marking her rise as a prominent pianist in Europe. Jonas's career was interrupted by World War II; after refusing to perform under Nazi control, she escaped Poland and eventually settled in Brazil. In 1946, Jonas resumed her career in New York, debuting at Carnegie Hall. She passed away on July 3, 1959.
