Afro-X, born Cristian de Souza Augusto on November 10, 1973, in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, is a rapper, educator, and activist whose career reflects a profound personal transformation and commitment to social justice. Emerging from the challenges of incarceration, he co-founded the influential rap group 509-E with Dexter while both were imprisoned in Carandiru Penitentiary. The group gained national attention with their debut album Provérbios 13 (2000), featuring tracks like "Oitavo Anjo," and followed up with MMII DC (2002 Depois de Cristo) before disbanding in 2003. Embarking on a solo career, Afro-X released O Regenerado in 2005, signaling a shift towards themes of redemption and societal critique. His 2009 album Das Ruas Pro Mundo included collaborations with artists such as Sandra de Sá and CPM22, and coincided with the release of his autobiography Ex-157: A História que a Mídia Desconhece, as well as the documentary Entre a Luz e a Sombra, which won the 4th Mostra Cinema e Direitos Humanos na América do Sul. In 2010, he collaborated with footballer Neymar on the track "Paixão de Brasileiro." Continuing his musical evolution, Afro-X released albums like Carta Magna (2020), Vida Bandida (2022), and Hip Hop (2023), often addressing themes of racial identity and social inequality. His 2023 EP Motivos features collaborations with Srta Paola and Daniel Quirino, showcasing his ongoing relevance in the Brazilian hip-hop scene. In 2024, he revisited his earlier work with a reissue of Das Ruas Pro Mundo, reaffirming his enduring impact on the genre.
