Thomas Hufschmidt, born on October 31, 1955 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, is a pianist and composer known for his work in modern jazz. Hufschmidt studied in Bonn, Essen, and Hamburg before touring Europe with Noctett. His breakthrough came with the band Virgin’s Dream, whose album Sophisty (1980) was awarded by the Deutsche Phonoakademie. He later collaborated with notable musicians such as Jan Akkerman, Albert Mangelsdorff, and Tony Lakatos. In 1986, he founded Tyron Park, a group that included Matthias Nadolny, Gunnar Plümer, and Jo Thönes. Hufschmidt has also worked with various formations, including those led by Wayne Bartlett, Ron Williams, and Remy Filipovitch. In 1990, Hufschmidt became a professor at Folkwang-Hochschule Essen, teaching jazz piano, theory, and big band leadership. Notable albums include Pepila with Tyron Park (1993) and Under Surface (2005).
