Udo Mechels is a Belgian singer and songwriter. He graduated from Erasmus University College in Brussels as a Bachelor Communication Management and worked as a communication professional for international tech and food companies.
At 30, Udo won The X-Factor on the Flemish commercial channel vtm, after which he released a first album at Sony BMG . A year later, he won the song contest Zo Is Er Maar Een on the public channel VRT. Udo’s rendition of Ik Mis Je Zo became a Dutch classic. He released a second and a third album with Sony Music and a fourth and fifth one with Universal Music. Udo recorded music in 4 languages: English, Dutch, French and German.
As a singer, he won several awards and golden records and was also the TV host of Hit The Road, the music program of the Flemish commercial channel vtm.
Since he became a professional musician, some 15 years ago, he started writing music for several artists all around the world. It is quite remarkable that - being himself the winner of The X-Factor - Udo wrote for 7 winners of talent shows, in Belgium and abroad. Apart from writing pop songs, Udo also writes music for theatre plays, for ads and commercials. Last year, he co-wrote the movie soundtrack for Viva Boma (Box Office Award for most popular Belgian movie in 2020). Some of the artists Udo wrote and co-wrote for: Jolin Tsai (Asia), Laura Bretan (America’s Got Talent) & The Tenors (Canada), Monrose (Germany), Maria Voskania (Germany), Richard Stirton (South-Africa) and Matteo Becucci (Italy).
As a writer, Udo started working for EMI Publishing, but for the last +10 years, as an independent publisher, he is working closely with Berlin-based publisher Sandra Mynheer and BMG Rights Management Germany.
As a child, Udo was a huge fan of the French songwriter duo Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon, which formed the basis for his love for songwriting. In 2020, he decides that it is time to convert his predilection for the French language into songs, whilst writing for his new age piano project Umeå Bodø and for other, young Belgian talents; coaching and guiding them in the music business.
