Ernst Deutsch

Ernst Deutsch was an Austrian actor born on September 16, 1890, in Prague. He made his acting debut in 1914 at the Volkstheater in Vienna under the direction of Berthold Viertel. His performance in the 1916 production of Der Sohn established his career as an expressionist performer. Deutsch appeared as the rabbi Famulus in the 1920 silent film El Golem. In April 1933, he left Germany due to his Jewish heritage and eventually emigrated to the United States in 1938. During his time in Hollywood, he performed under the name Ernest Dorian. He received the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the 1948 Venice Film Festival for his performance in Der Prozeß. Deutsch portrayed Baron Kurtz in the 1949 film The Third Man. Later roles included the title character in Nathan der Weise. Deutsch died on March 22, 1969, in Berlin.
