David Cole Idema, known professionally as David Geddes, was born on July 1, 1950, in the United States. He began his music career as a drummer and vocalist for the band The Fredric, also known as Rock Garden, releasing several records in the early 1970s. One of these releases, "House on Holly Road", received notable airplay in Michigan. Geddes adopted his stage name from a street in Ann Arbor, where he attended the University of Michigan. Despite recording multiple singles for major labels, none achieved significant success. He temporarily left the music industry to pursue law school at Wayne State University. However, producer Paul Vance recalled Geddes' voice and invited him to record "Run Joey Run", which peaked at number 4 on the US Hot 100 in October 1975. This breakthrough led Geddes to drop out of law school and return to music full-time and he released his debut album Run Joey Run later that year, which included his sophomore hit "The Last Game of the Season (A Blind Man in the Bleachers)", which entered the Hot 100.
