Raymond Boni, born on March 15, 1947, in Toulon, France, was a guitarist known for his contributions to improvised music and jazz. Initially influenced by rock 'n' roll, particularly Bill Haley, Boni began studying piano before turning to the harmonica and guitar. His early exposure to Charles Mingus's improvisation at age eleven shaped his musical direction. Boni's career took off when he founded the Association Vivante with percussionist Bertrand Gauthier in 1969. Throughout the 1970s, he collaborated with notable figures such as Gérard Marais and Joe McPhee, leading to significant albums like Rêve en couleurs (1976) and Pot-Pourri Pour Parce Que (1978). His work with McPhee continued into the 1980s, resulting in acclaimed releases such as Pour Django (1985), which won multiple awards, including Diapason d'Or.
