Eric Matthews is an American composer, musician, and record producer who was born on January 12, 1969, in Compton, California. In 1992, he formed the band Cardinal with Richard Davies while living in Boston. The group released the Toy Bell EP in 1993 and a self-titled debut album in 1994. Matthews also collaborated with Lou Barlow and Bob Fay of Sebadoh as the group Belt Buckle, releasing an EP in 1993. Matthews signed with Sub Pop and released the debut solo album It's Heavy in Here (1995), which included the radio hit “Fanfare”. He followed this with the 1997 album The Lateness of the Hour. Matthews later worked as a sideman for acts such as Ivy, The Dandy Warhols, Tahiti 80, and Elliott Smith. Under the Empyrean label, he released the solo albums Six Kinds of Passion Looking For An Exit (2005), Foundation Sounds (2006), and The Imagination Stage (2008). In 2006, Matthews formed the instrumental group Seinking Ships with guitarist Christopher Seink, releasing a self-titled EP (2007) and the album Museum Quality Capture (2010). Matthews joined the band SheLoom in 2013.
