The Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz is the stage name of the choral choir of the Cistercian monastery Stift Heiligenkreuz in Lower Austria. The monastery was founded in 1133 and is the second oldest Cistercian monastery in the world to have existed continuously since its foundation. The Choralschola consists of monks from the monastery who dedicate themselves to the cultivation of Gregorian chant. in 2008, the monks released their debut album Chant: Music for Paradise, which was released in Europe under this title and worldwide as Chant: Music for the Soul. The album achieved gold and platinum status in several countries and was awarded the ECHO Klassik in the "Bestseller of the Year" category in 2009. Further albums followed, including Chant: Amor et Passio (2011), Chant: Stabat Mater (2012) and Chant: Into the Light (2014). in 2015, the album Chant for Peace was released in collaboration with the singer Timna Brauer and the Elias Meiri Ensemble. The monks do not appear as individuals, as they see themselves first and foremost as consecrated people who sing for religious and non-professional reasons. Their repertoire includes traditional Gregorian chants, which they cultivate in their daily liturgy and make accessible to a wider audience through their recordings.
