Christopher Jay Bolland, known professionally as C.J. Bolland, was born on June 18, 1971, in Stockton-on-Tees, England, and later moved to Antwerp, Belgium. He is an electronic music producer and DJ who gained prominence in the dance music scene. As a teenager, Bolland was influenced by the Belgian underground new wave, electro, and EBM scenes. His first productions were aired on Belgium's Liaisons Dangereuses radio show, leading to his signing with R&S Records. In 1989, he released "Do That Dance", followed by several more tracks under various aliases such as Space Opera and The Project. Bolland's breakthrough came in 1991 with the track "Horsepower" on the Ravesignal III EP, which earned him industry respect. His first major album, The 4th Sign, was released in 1992 and included notable singles like "Camargue" and "Nightbreed". In 1995, he released his second album for R&S, Electronic Highway. Bolland left R&S in late 1994 to sign with Internal/PolyGram. His first studio album for PolyGram was The Analogue Theatre (1996), which featured the hit single "Sugar Is Sweeter", reaching Number 1 on the United States Hot Dance Club Play chart and Number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. Further hits included "The Prophet" and "It Ain't Gonna Be Me".
