The group consisted of bassist Geoff Reu, guitarist Todd Mohney, and drummer Timothy Remis. They released their debut EP, Bury Me at Make-Out Creek, in 2000. In June 2002, the group released the studio album The Romance of Helen Trent. Following a signing with Eyeball Records in February 2003, the band released the EP We Sing Sin in May 2003. The group’s musical style incorporated elements of metalcore and post-hardcore. The Killing Tree became inactive in 2004. In 2006, the compilation album Hair: Chicago Punk Cuts was released, which featured the band’s track “Dressed to Fuck”. McIlrath subsequently gained further recognition as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Rise Against.
