Gerry Hayes, born Günter Hess on August 23, 1934, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, was a vibraphonist known for his work in swing, mainstream, and modern jazz. After classical training on piano and drums, he moved to New York City to engage with the local jazz scene. Returning to Europe, Hayes worked as a drummer in big bands before forming his own band in Paris in 1960. He toured extensively across Europe, North Africa, and Lebanon, collaborating with artists like Inge Brandenburg, Nancy Wilson, and Diana Ross. Later, he became a key figure in Munich's jazz scene, owning venues like "Gerry's Music Corner" and performing with ensembles including his "Big Band Swing." His notable album release was Swing Explosion (1994). Hayes passed away on November 1, 2020, in Munich.
