Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, born in Seattle, Washington, founded Sunn O))) in 1998 as a tribute duo called Mars After Earth. Their breakthrough came with the 2000 releases The Grimmrobe Demos and ØØ Void on Hydra Head. The band expanded its sound with Flight of the Behemoth (2002), White 1 (2003), and White 2 (2004), adding percussion and vocals and beginning collaborations with Mayhem singer Attila Csihar. Subsequent albums-Black One (2005), Monoliths & Dimensions (2009), Kannon (2015), Life Metal (2019) and Pyroclasts (2019)-solidified their drone‑doom reputation. In 2026, they released their fifteenth self-titled album Sunn O))), their first on Sub Pop Records. The band has worked with Boris, Ulver, and Scott Walker.
