Thomas Köner, born in 1965 in Bochum, West Germany, is a multimedia artist known for his work combining visual and auditory experiences. His early discography includes Nunatak Gongamur (1990) and Teimo (1991). Köner's dark ambient style, characterized by low drones and static soundscapes evocative of desolate Arctic places, gained recognition through albums such as Permafrost (1993) and Aubrite (1995). He collaborated with Andy Mellwig under the name Porter Ricks. Köner's multimedia projects include video art installations and sound performances, earning him prestigious awards such as the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica in 2004 and the Tiger Cub Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2005. He has also created music for silent films, including scores for Metropolis by Fritz Lang and Faust by F.W. Murnau.
