Whiplash, an American thrash metal band formed in 1984 in Passaic, New Jersey, was led by guitarist and vocalist Tony Portaro. The group emerged from the burgeoning East Coast metal scene, with Tony Portaro and drummer Tony Scaglione initially shaping the band’s aggressive sound. Their breakthrough came with the debut album Power and Pain (1986), released on Roadrunner Records, which established the band’s reputation for high‑energy riffing. In 1987, Ticket to Mayhem followed, further solidifying their presence. The 1989 release Insult to Injury introduced vocalist Glenn Hansen and marked a stylistic shift toward a more polished thrash aesthetic. After a period of lineup changes and a brief disbandment, Whiplash returned in 1995, issuing Cult of One (1996) and Sit Stand Kneel Prey (1997) before recording Thrashback (1998). The band reunited in 2009 with Unborn Again, and after extensive touring across Europe, North America, and South America, they signed with Metal Blade Records in 2018, working on the forthcoming Old School American Way. Throughout their career, Whiplash maintained a steady touring schedule, participated in major festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Hellfest, and remained a consistent influence within the thrash metal community, though they never achieved mainstream chart success.
