Merciless, a Swedish death and thrash metal band from Strängnäs, was formed in 1986 by guitarist Erik Wallin, bassist Fredrik Karlén, and drummer Stefan Carlsson. The group initially went through name changes before settling on Merciless in early 1987. Their first demo, Behind the Black Door, was released that same year. After a lineup change with Roger "Rogga" Pettersson taking over vocals, they released their second demo, Realm of the Dark. This demo caught the attention of Deathlike Silence Productions, leading to the release of their debut album, The Awakening, in 1990. The band's subsequent albums include The Treasures Within (1992), Unbound (1994), and Merciless (2002). Notable milestones include a Scandinavian tour prior to the release of Unbound.
