Maria Lawson, born Maria Lawson on 24 May 1979 in London, United Kingdom, is a British singer who began her career in the late 1990s as a vocalist for the Italian dance group Ti.Pi.Cal. Her first chart‑successing single, "Hidden Passion", appeared in 1997 and was followed by several other releases such as "Live For Today" and "Follow Your Heart". In 2005, Lawson gained wider recognition as the eighth‑placed contestant on the second series of The X Factor, a placement that led to a recording contract with Sony BMG’s Phonogenic imprint. She released her self‑titled debut album, Maria Lawson, on 28 August 2006; the single "Sleepwalking" peaked at Number 20 on the UK Singles Chart and sold over 50 000 copies. Lawson’s subsequent work included the single "Breaking Me Down" from her unreleased second album Emotional Rollercoaster, and a lead‑role performance in the West End production of Thriller – Live from April 2009 to March 2010. In 2014, the album Emotional Rollercoaster was issued through Right Track Music/Universal Music Operations, marking her continued presence in contemporary R&B and soul music.
